Taco Seasoning

Once a year I go through my cabinets and (gasp) throw away expired spices. I write down every thing I’ve thrown away, in an effort to not make the same mistake.  I’ve also declared to stop buying stupid spices.  What’s a stupid spice you ask. Well, it’s spices like white pepper and clove.  You use it for one dish and NEVER. EVER. AGAIN. It kills me.

I also make a huge batch of taco seasoning every January, so that I can use up the spices I have on hand. I’m not going to lie, there are some definitely expired spices in my new taco seasoning.  I normally would have thrown away half of these but instead. Voila, I just save $1.19 at the store for every taco night for 2020.

Taco Seasoning Recipe from 2016

  • 2 Tablespoons Chili Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon and 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 Tablespoon Onion Powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Garlic Powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1.5 teaspoons Cumin
  • 1.5 teaspoons Oregano
  • 0.75 teaspoons Pepper
  • 3 shakes of Cayenne Pepper

2 Tablespoons of mix per pound of browned ground beef and 1/2 cup of water

Double Batch of Taco Seasoning

  • 4 Tablespoons Chili Powder
  • 2 Tablespoon and 2 teaspoon Paprika
  • 2 Tablespoon Onion Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Cumin
  • 1 Tablespoon Oregano
  • 1.5 teaspoons Pepper
  • 6 shakes of Cayenne Pepper

2 Tablespoons of mix per pound of browned ground beef and 1/2 cup of water

It was a great project for my 4 year old.  He measured each spice and then had the joy of shaking it up.

It reminded me of the colored sand projects you can buy from Michael’s Craft store for $10. You know the one, it’s super cool until it eventually gets all mixed up and makes your kid cry.
